Purpose
During a comprehensive eye exam an eye doctor will assess:
Eye Muscle Move.
The physical health of your eyes and the surrounding.
Visual Acuity
Measures how clearly you see. Each eye is tested separately.
Refractive Error
how light waves pass through the cornea and lens of the eye.
Visual Field
how you can see on either side of you while not moving your eyes.
Eye Muscle Movement
A test called a cover/uncover test may also be done. You will look at a distant object and the person doing the test will cover the other eye, then after a few seconds, uncover it. You will be asked to keep looking at the distant object. How the eye moves after it is uncovered may show problems. Then the test is performed with the other eye
Visual Acuity Test
During a comprehensive eye exam an eye doctor will assess:
Refractive Error Test
A refraction test is usually given as part of a routine eye examination. It may also be called a vision test. This test tells your eye doctor exactly what prescription you need in your glasses or contact lenses. Normally, a value of 20/20 is considered to be optimum, or perfect vision. Individuals who have 20/20 vision are able to read letters that are 3/8 of an inch tall from 20 feet away.
Visual Field
The visual field is the entire area (field of vision) that can be seen when the eyes are focused on a single point. In addition to what can be seen straight ahead, the visual field includes what can be seen above, below, and to either side of the point the eyes are focused on. Vision is typically the sharpest in the middle of the visual field. A visual field test is often given as part of an eye exam. Visual field testing helps your doctor to determine where your side vision (peripheral vision) begins and ends and how well you can see objects in your peripheral vision.
Color Vision
A color vision test, also known as the Ishihara color test, measures your ability to tell the difference among colors. If you don’t pass this test, you may have poor color vision, or your doctor may tell you that you’re color blind. However, being truly color blind is a very rare condition in which you’re only able to see shades of gray.
